Online college courses provide an excellent way to acquire the skills needed to be a successful accountant. Accountants are responsible for a multitude of projects throughout a business. They keep track of records, give suggestions on how to be more efficient, they prepare taxes, payroll and many other government required forms. Every business has an accountant. This is one of the most high demand fields out there, thanks partially to a new government law, Sarbanes Oxley, requiring closer scrutiny of all publicly traded companies.
Many online college students choose to major in Accounting, because it's easier to find a job when they graduate. Accounting is not for everyone, you should be relatively good at math, and be very detailed oriented. As an accountant advances in their career, their critical reasoning skills will be put to the test. They will be asked to make suggestions on the financial health of an organization. No one will know the financial health of an organization more then it's accounting departments.
Accounting usually does not require an advanced degree to get a job. Though some jobs like to see that you have a license. Many accountants will attempt to get a CPA, a 4-part exam, to receive a government license. This exam varies in difficulty depending on the state in which you are applying to. You do not need a license to be an accountant, but you will need a license to sign off on forms or to open your own firm. Many accountants will go to graduate school for a master's in taxation or an MBA, to further their career. Unlike other professional degrees, such as a lawyer, a Master's is not required to practice.
