Deciding What College To Attend After Acceptance

If you have been accepted to a college, your financial aid package should arrive soon thereafter.  Do not make any decisions until you have seen its contents.  Even if you get into your first choice college, if you don't get enough grants you still may not be able to attend.  The less selective colleges offer much more grant money to students with excellent grades, because they bring up the value of their school. 

With the rising cost of college, most people will just pick the college that is the most affordable for them.  Though some families break the bank to send their children to top tier colleges, there is absolutely no evidence that your child will earn more money over their lifetime then if they attended a less prestigious college.  If your child has all the characteristics of a successful person, such as good work ethic, ambition, intelligence, and common sense, they will likely get just as far in life regardless of the brand name of their college.  College students put way too much emphasis on the prestige of a college.  If you are lazy, it doesn't matter if you go to Harvard, you're going to have a hard time finding a well paying job - its just that simple.  But the probability of a lazy person attending Harvard is probably pretty small.  Parents also need to put less pressure on their teenagers.  It is not a reflection on your parenting if your child does not attend an Ivy league college. 

If you can visit the campus again.  Talk to other students there, and learn about their experiences.  Stay overnight at a dorm.  Learn more about your major, and other majors in case you change your mind.  Keep an ongoing conversation with your family while you are deciding what college to attend.  Maybe your parents don't want you to go to school very far away, or maybe you have relatives that live near that school.
