Essay Exams
Depending on how you feel about your writing skills, the essay portion of a test can be a blessing, or a curse. Here are some techniques for the later.
- Keep your responses concise and get to the point.
- Outline your essay on a piece of scrap paper, if there is enough time.
- Start with a clear topic sentence.
- Leave time to review your essay for spelling and grammar errors.
- Don't talk in circles just to fill up a page. Repeating yourself will not get you bonus points.
- Your first few sentences should be an introduction stating what your points are. By the end of your essay, you should have proved your point by stating a number of relevant facts.
- If you think you have a run on sentence, break up the sentence into multiple sentences. A run on won't make any sense.
- Start writing, sometimes the ideas will just come to you as you go.
- Try to support your argument with at least 2-3 facts.
- Writing is a learned skill. The more you practice, the better you will be at it.
